Plan a Wine Country Picnic | Picnic Areas | Delis

A delicious picnic lunch and a glass of wine in a beautiful vineyard setting is one of life’s greatest pleasures. A trip to the wine country would not be complete without a delicious picnic lunch. We list tips and ideas for a successful picnic for your California Wine Country Getaway

When you plan your wine country getaway include a scheduled stop for a picnic lunch. Lunch can be as simple as a deli sandwich or as elaborate as a spread of gourmet foods and epicurean delights.

It is a good idea to have a picnic basket with essential items handy. These include plates, eating utensils, wine glasses, small cutting board, a table cloth, napkins, and a corkscrew. A small ice chest is ideal if you plan to pick up a lunch along the way. It is a must if you are transporting food for any length of time.

When you picnic at a winery it is customary that you drink the winery’s wine. It is just not a good idea to take up a picnic space at a winery while drinking a wine from another winery.

If you don’t have your own wine glasses, most wineries will lend you some. Ask the winery to borrow the glasses when you buy the wine for your picnic. Make sure you ask for a chilled bottle if choosing a white wine. You can also ask them to open the bottle for you.

We have made a convenient list of good delis along the roads of the Wine Country Getaways. We have also listed our favorite wineries or picnic spots along the route. You will find the top delis and picnic spots in the Tour Details of each wine country region. Or, click below on a wine region and find a listing of the top picnic spots and delis.
