Hidden Paso Robles Wineries Westside
Some of the
best parts of the Paso Robles wine country are the many
backroads of the area that lead to fantastic vistas and
out-of-the-way wineries. You can visit all these wineries
over one or two days, or combine a visit to one or more
of these wineries with the other two wine trails on the
west side of Highway 101. Take it slow and always pack a
lunch for a great picnic time on this wine trail. This trail
goes in a loop starting and ending in downtown Paso Robles.

Rotta Vineyards
The first stop will be the oldest winery in Paso Robles with a start date of
1908. The original family's descendants still operate the winery today.
The tasting room is very cool, with displays of some of the old jug wine bottles.
There are many good red and white wines to try, but we especially like the Rotta
Zinfandel wines. To get to Rotta, leave downtown Paso Robles, heading south on
Spring Street. Take the ramp onto 101 South and then take the exit for
Las Tablas Road. Turn right onto Las Tablas Road and then a left on Winery Road.
Tasting room open daily 10 to 5,

Westberg Cellars
This next winery might be the most interesting on this hidden wine
trail. Westberg makes only a few hundred cases of wine per year.
They make only one white but several delicious-tasting reds. There
is one wine that has the label Turtle Rock. This wine is made
by Don Burns, nephew of the owners Tom and Peggy Westberg. Believe
us when we say that this wine that sells for $24 (time of tasting)
is one of the best deals around. You can read more about it on
our blog post. To get to Westberg from Rotta, head south on Winery
Road and then turn right onto Vineyard Drive. Turn right onto
Willow Creek Road and then watch very carefully for the small
sign leading you to Westberg Cellars. This winery is only open
one weekend a month and on special-event weekends, but don’t
let that stop you. Make an appointment to visit this cool
little winery.
Tasting room open by appointment and the 3rd weekend
of month, 12 to 4

Pipestone Vineyards
Leave Westberg and continue north on Willow Creek Road, take the first right
onto Las Tablas Willow Creek Road. Take the first left onto Niderer Road. Stay
on Niderer and the Pipestone entrance will be on the left. At Pipestone
Vineyards, you will find a small family-owned winery run by Jeff Pipes and his
wife Florence Wong. They are dedicated to sustainable and organic farming. No
chemicals or pesticides are used. The entire vineyard has been designed using
the principles of feng shui. The wine production is small and the emphasis is
on Rhone style wines. These include estate wines of Viognier, Grenache, Mourvedre,
and Syrah.
Tasting room open Thursday to Monday, 11 am to 5,

Vineyards
Dunning Vineyards Estate Winery
Just up ahead on Niderer Road is Dunning Vineyards. This is another
small family-run winery. In contrast to Pipestone, Dunning Vineyards
makes only one Rhone style wine, a Syrah, while the other wines
include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a Meritage
blend. The winemaker is owner Robert Dunning, who you will likely
find pouring your wines in the tasting room.
Tasting room open Thursday to Monday, Phone: (805) 238-4763

Calcareous Vineyard
This winery is named after the type of soil that is found in this
area of Paso Robles. It is similar to soils found in the Rhone
region of France, and thus the emphasis at Calcareous on Rhone
style wines. The tasting room is vast and the views panoramic.
This is a great spot for a picnic lunch, or a chance to just relax
and take in the views while sipping a nice chilled glass of Marsanne. To
get to Calcareous from Dunning, you have a couple of choices. This
route is a little longer but has better roads. Go back along Niderer
Road, turn right onto Las Tablas Willow Creek Road. Keep
left at the fork and turn right on Peachy Canyon Road. Continue
for about five miles and then look for the signs to Calcareous.
Tasting room open daily 11 to 5
