Go Fish Restaurant in St. Helena

Go Fish is Cindy Pawlcyn’s third restaurant, with the emphasis obviously on fish. Cindy owns long-time favorite and standby, Mustard’s Grill in Yountville and Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen in St. Helena. This restaurant was formerly the Pinot Blanc restaurant and it has been completely remodeled. In contrast to Mustard’s and Cindy’s Backstreet, the décor is very modern with a spacious and open look to the dining area. We visited for lunch on a Thursday around 1:30. The place was jammed and the wait for a table was an hour and a half. Go Fish opened in October and apparently a lot of folks want to try it out. We were able to get a seat at the bar without a wait. Cindy Pawlcyn has always been noted for her small plates dishes and at Go Fish there are plenty of small plates to choose and share with your party. There is also a sushi bar and that was quite popular on our visit. This is the only restaurant in the Valley that we can think of that has this many fish choices on the menu. Of course, the world famous Napa Cabernet Sauvignon will not pair up well with most choices on the menu.

My friend and I both had the soup special, a creamy mushroom soup. The soup was a perfect starter on this cold day. Mike had the BBQ Hog Island Oysters and I had a very delicious crispy crab cake sandwich. A funny story about the crab: Dungeness crab season had just opened in northern California and I asked the bartender if the crab was Dungeness crab. We were quite surprised to find he didn’t know the difference between Dungeness and Alaskan crab.

We definitely have to try dinner here. For now it is too early to tell how good this restaurant really is. I do prefer the cozier atmosphere at Mustard’s and Cindy’s. We rated our dining experience a 4.5 out 5 on our rating scale.

The Good: Great selection of small plates and fish items. Cool décor.
The Bad: Long wait if you don’t have a reservation.
